Get your free estimateClopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The Marietta Owner’s Guide
If your Clopay garage door has a snapped cable or a worn lift drum, we stock Clopay-compatible cables and drums on our trucks and typically complete the full replacement in Marietta for $130 – $250, often same-day. Most homeowners discover the problem when the door suddenly hangs crooked, makes a grinding noise, or refuses to open at all. You’ll usually see a frayed or dangling cable along one side, or hear the opener straining against a door that’s binding on one track.

Here’s what we know from years of Clopay calls across Marietta: cables and drums fail as a pair. The cable is the braided steel line that runs along each side of the door and connects to the torsion spring system above. The drum is the grooved wheel at the end of the torsion bar that the cable winds onto as the door moves. When one fails, the other is almost always damaged or worn past safe use. Aaron Teague and our crew have replaced enough of these in East Cobb, Powder Springs Road corridor, and out toward the Marietta Square to know exactly which Clopay models used which drum profile in which years.
Which Clopay Models This Applies To
Clopay has used different cable and drum setups across its residential lines, so matching the right part matters. The three series we work on most in Marietta are:
- Clopay Classic and Gallery series (steel, standard lift): These use a 4-inch or 5-inch drum with a 1/8-inch cable, depending on door height and weight. The most common residential configuration in Marietta homes built since the 1990s.
- Clopay Reserve and Coachman series (wood-look, heavier doors): Heavier doors mean thicker cables (5/32-inch) and larger drums. Mixing these up with the lighter Classic parts is exactly how doors bind and snap cables again within weeks.
- Clopay Ideal and Value series (entry-level): These can have a one-piece drum-and-bearing design that is not interchangeable with the two-piece setups on premium lines. If you order a generic drum online, this is the model where we see the most mis-matches.
Two things to check before calling: the model label on the inside of the door panel near the bottom, and the stamped number on the old drum if it is still legible. If neither is available, we measure shaft diameter, drum profile, and cable width on site. We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Clopay, so we are free to use either OEM Clopay parts or high-quality aftermarket equivalents. For drums, we prefer OEM because the groove profile has to be exact. For cables, a quality aftermarket set with the correct diameter and end fitting is functionally identical and costs less. A note from Georgia summers: high heat and humidity accelerate the rusting at the cable’s lower end fitting, where the steel meets the bracket. We replace more cables in July and August in Marietta than any other time of year.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
- The door hangs at an angle when partially open. This is the clearest sign one cable has snapped or slipped. The spring is still lifting one side, so the door cocks sideways. Do not keep cycling the opener; the remaining cable is now carrying the full load.
- You see visible fraying or a single broken strand on the cable. Braided steel cable does not fail all at once typically. If you see loose strands, that cable is done. The broken strand snags on the drum and accelerates wear on everything else.
- The door jerks or shudders at roughly the same point each time it opens or closes. That is nearly always a drum with a worn groove or a cable that has jumped its slot. The cable spools unevenly and the door fights itself every cycle.
- You hear a rubbing, scraping, or metallic grinding near the top of the door when it moves. Drums on torsion systems sit above the door, at either end of the spring shaft. When the bearing seat inside the drum wears out, the sound is unmistakable once you know what it is.
- The opener motor runs but the door barely moves, then reverses. A cable off the drum creates so much uneven resistance that the opener’s force limiter trips. Homeowners often blame the opener. Nine times out of ten when this happens on a Clopay in Marietta, the drum or cable is the actual fault.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Marietta, a full Clopay cable and drum replacement is typically $130 – $250. The lower end covers replacing both cables with correct-length, correct-diameter steel line and re-seating existing drums on a standard-lift door. The higher end covers both cables and both drums replaced as a set, which is what we recommend when the drums are more than about eight years old or show visible groove wear. The exact number depends on your Clopay model, door weight, and whether the shaft or bearings also need attention.
That price includes the parts, the labor, a full inspection of the spring system and tracks while we’re up there, and the written price in your hand before we touch a bolt. We also back the work with our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within 365 days from the date of repair, we come back and make it right at no charge. Not a prorated credit, not a callback fee. That guarantee is written, every time, and it applies to every cable and drum job we do in Marietta.
DIY or Call Us?
First, the honest warning: do not attempt to remove or adjust cables on a torsion spring system yourself. The torsion spring (the large coil mounted above the door that does most of the lifting) is under extreme tension. If the cable is off the drum, that tension is uneven and unpredictable. A cable or spring under load can release with enough force to cause serious injury. This is the one garage door repair where we tell even experienced DIYers to stop what they are doing and call a trained professional.
What you can safely do: visually inspect the cables for fraying (no touching, just looking), note whether the door hangs crooked, and keep the opener disengaged until someone has looked at it. Do not try to re-seat a cable that has jumped the drum. The right way to fix this involves releasing spring tension with winding bars, setting the cable properly, and re-tensioning the spring to the correct quarter-turn count for your door weight. Our techs do this every week across Marietta, and we show up with the parts likely needed already in the van. Call (762) 209-3693 and we can usually get someone to you same-day.
FAQs
In the Marietta climate, expect 8 to 12 years from factory cables and drums, with cable failure usually coming first. High summer humidity plus the stop-start heat cycles of a garage facing the Georgia sun wears the lower cable fittings faster than the rest of the system. Drums can last longer than cables, but if a snapped cable has scored the groove, the drum is done too. Call (762) 209-3693 and we’ll inspect both while we’re there.
No. Cables on a torsion system are not repairable. A splice or patch on a load-bearing cable under spring tension will fail, and when it fails, it fails without warning. We replace cables in matched pairs (both sides, even if only one shows wear) so the door lifts evenly. It costs $130 – $250 for the full cable-and-drum job in Marietta depending on what is worn, and the written quote is yours before we start.
Most standard-lift Clopay doors in Marietta take 60 to 90 minutes from setup to final test. That includes releasing spring tension, replacing both cables and drums, re-tensioning to spec, balancing the door, and running it through several cycles. If bearings or brackets are also worn, figure closer to two hours. Call (762) 209-3693 and we’ll give you a realistic window when we know your model.
Our vans carry the common Clopay cable diameters and drum sizes used on Classic, Gallery, Coachman, and Reserve doors in Marietta, along with parts for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie openers. If your door has an unusual drum profile or an older discontinued setup, we source it the same day from local supply houses. Either way, the price is written down for you before any part goes on the door.
